About the project
This project evaluates urbanism associated with on-going transformation of road infrastructure in Nairobi.
It maps and proposes informal urbanism with a focus on connections created or altered in unintended ways by transformation of road infrastructure. The central argument is that such creation or alteration of connections (and the resultant adaptations) suggest emergent urban processes that can neither be fathomed nor examined by traditional tools of urbanism and narrow classifications of informality. The project promotes a diachronic view of urban transformation not just as a historic process but as an often complex, spontaneous and evolving process that reconfigures space in ways that excoriate conventional urban planning and design tools.
